Extra Credit

Choose either Section 1 or Section 2. And follow the instructions for that particular section. You do not have to choose from each section. Choose only one section, and choose a prompt from that section.    Section 1: The Expository Writing Option. Note, one of the prompts offers you extra credit. Choose ONLY ONEEEEE of the following prompts, and write a 2-page minimum, double-spaced, mini-essay. What I means by “mini-essay” is to shape your response around creating an opening (introduction), a body (the details, quotes), and a conclusion. Bring in at least three good quotes. Use this as an opportunity to practice writing an essay. I will grade it on the effort you put into it in developing your writing, building off of the skills that you gained from working on the Poetry exam.  1.     Choose two of the stories from the fiction packet (at least one should be a story we did not discuss in class), and examine the issue of plot. Explain the conflict in each of the stories, and how that conflict reaches a climax, an inflection point in the story. Explain why you believe this is the climactic point in each of your stories, and then explain how that climax leads to the resolution. In the end, compare/contrast the effects of the climax in each of the stories.   2.     Choose two of the stories from the fiction packet (at least one should not be a story we discussed in class), and examine how each of these stories resolves. Examine the effectiveness of the endings: do they tie everything together or leave things irresolute? Are they expected or unexpected and shocking? How does this effect the stories as a whole? Address how do the endings in each of these stories tie together the beginning and the middle. Address how the endings to these stories might have parallels to the beginning, and how it effects the story. How do the endings in these stories effect the stories as a whole and what kind of meaning do you think they produce? Finally, compare and contrast the effectiveness of the endings of each of these stories.   3.     Choose two of the stories from the fiction packet (at least one should not be a story we discussed in class), and examine the issue of setting. Remember that setting is not just geographic place, but involves the different physical locations of a story, the atmosphere/tone of a story, and the time period when a story takes place. Further, remember that setting does not just involve what, but how and author depicts it. How do the various settings of your two stories create the tone and atmosphere of each story? How do the various settings contribute to the meaning or the message of the stories? How do the settings affect the plot and the conflict? Finally, what concluding assessments can you make about the function of setting in the two  stories and in general?  4.     Extra Credit Option if you choose this one. You will get 7 extra points on the 25 points available for the exam.  Choose two stories, and examine the issue of point of view. In your mini-essay, explain what the point of view is, why, and how that point of view works in the story. Examine the effects of the point of view in the stories, why you think the author chose that point of view, and how the point of view is integral into understanding the theme or message in the story. You might also consider explaining any aspects of the point of view that creates limitations for how we understand the story.  The Texts from Class from which You Can Choose  ·       “Girl,” Jamaica Kincaid ·      “Revelation,” Flannery O’Connor ·      “Dawn” and “Mattie Michael” from The Women of Brewster Place ·      “Bluebeard’s Egg,” Margaret Atwood  ·      “Indian Camp,” Ernest Hemingway ·      “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” poem by Langston Hughe ·      “We Real Cool,” poem by Gwendolyn Brooks
